Water Resistant Garden Lighting Explained

Easy Connect outdoor garden lighting system comes with many advanced specifications, but the one that has everyone talking is the IP67 waterproof garden lighting capability. Here’s everything you need to know…

The International Protection Rating, sometimes also interpreted as Ingress Protection Rating consists of the letters IP followed by two digits and an optional letter. Defined in international standard. IEC 60529, it classifies the degrees of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects including body parts, dust, accidental contact, and water in electrical enclosures.

This standard is used to provide users more detailed information rather than terms such as waterproof. The first digit indicates the level of dust resistance, the second water resistance. Dust resistance levels go from 0 up to 6 while water-resistance goes from 0 to 9. The higher up the scale, the better protected the lighting system is.

Another use of IP67 is within mobile phones such as the Samsung Galaxy and Apple iPhone 7 with their IP67 Certification. When looking at studies from testing its capabilities, the phones can withstand dust, be
spilt on and even cases of it used in the shower, but when an accident like dropping it down the toilet happens where the phone is submerged for a period of time, the phone will have water damage.

With IP67, it isn’t only about depth, it’s also about water pressure. Avoiding water contact is obviously a good idea when it comes to electrical equipment so instead, consider the IP67 certification as a safety net against the worst case scenarios.

This can be further explained if you look at the values between 0 and 6 for liquid ingress protection, the guide mentions nothing about submersion only “projection” which starts with drips, sprays and splashes, eventually ending at immersion. However, the common denominator is the amount of force and pressure with which the water is being projected. The simplest way to imagine this is with a mobile phone getting blasted by a fire hose

The simplest way to imagine this is with a mobile phone getting blasted by a fire hose is of course going to have more damage than one sitting in a shallow bowl of water regardless of whether or not it is submerged. With this, Easy Connect lighting is water resistant and caters for the UK and Irelands rainy weather but is not recommended to be submerged for long periods of time.
